Certifications
Thursday, August 14, 2008 at 10:00AM Recently with all the talk of “going green” and the buzz around FSC printing I found a few other certifications that are good to look out for. See the list below.
Sustainable Forestry Initiative ® (SFI®)
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®)
American Tree Farm System® (ATFS)
Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC®)
Did you know that only 12.5% of the forests in the US are certified? Well its true! Looks like the US needs to step it up a bit. The largest out of all the certifications is the SFI® with the ATFS® following a close second. (International Paper)
This information is thanks to a nifty series from IP paper called Down to Earth. If you would check out the series here is the link to order.
Mailbox
Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at 10:45AM Lately these days it seems like I have the hardest time getting the mail out of the mailbox. Besides the fact that its a tiny box that does not hold much. It still seems to get filled on a daily basis with massive amounts of magazines. So many in fact that over half if not all get run through the paper shredder. Don’t get me wrong, I know the design industry is partly to blame for this mess but I still feel overwhelmed when the mailbox is full. So… I’ve found this great nifty place to help every unsubscribe to those unwanted publications. Check out https://www.catalogchoice.org/. I’ve go through routinely to see if they have updated any new publications and keep taking myself off those lists that I don’t want on. It seems that they do not have all of them but is a great start to reduce the clutter.
Recycled Paper
Monday, August 4, 2008 at 04:46PM Recently one of our many print vendors brought up a great “green” subject. With all the FSC printing and the use of recycled papers. By selecting a FSC certified paper that already has recycled materials in the paper is only adding more waste to our landfills. According to my sources the use of the recycled paper can not be broken down a second time. So in a sense we are adding more into the landfills. Hmm, I think I need to investigate this more. More to come on this later!
